The Renaissance of the telecom industry means that many shows are coming back strong, being more widely attended and having more exhibitors and sponsorship dollars.  That is why it was surprising to see the Comdex show being cancelled for the second year in a row.  Comdex used to be Las Vegas fest that was the largest annual IT gathering.  Tyler Hamilton has a good post on why Comdex went bust in the aftermath of the dot-com and telecom bubbles.  Here is a short excerpt:

Comdex is no longer relevant. The successful and growing trade shows -- such as the CTIA show in New Orleans -- focus on wireless gadgets and devices that are easier for consumers to relate to and which pay attention to style and sexiness as much as functionality. Who cares, really, about the latest Oracle database technology and other behind-the-wall infrastructure technologies that enterprises use. Boring. People want to be wowed and want to tinker with gadgets. You can't do that with enterprise software.

Despite all that, and having spoken at the Canadian version of the show back in 2001, it would be nice to see Comdex bounce back.
