Google is officially making more and more inroads into the desktop, having announced its new Google Desktop, a utility that enables PC users to search and index their local files.  The company also released an SDK enabling third party developers to add extra functionality such as searching web histories and instant messages via a set of APIs.

Note: has someone talked to Niklas Zennström or other P2P enthusiasts about using peer-to-peer technologies to perform a "mega search"?  More projects such as JXTA Search are needed out there.  Maybe someone at Google Labs or Microsoft is already working on something along those lines...
